Hey friends, it’s your tech-loving med-tech blogger here! 👋
Just a few days ago (March 10, 2026, to be exact), I saw the news drop and got genuinely excited: Karl Storz just got FDA clearance for their FIVE S 6.5 sterile single-use bronchoscope! 🔥
This isn’t some minor update—it’s a pretty clear signal that even the oldest giants in endoscopy are doubling down hard on the disposable wave, especially for tough ICU and emergency airway scenarios.
Why This Matters Right Now
The FIVE S 6.5 is built for critical care docs, intensivists, respiratory therapists—anyone dealing with heavy secretions or super urgent airway situations in the ICU/ER.
Key highlights from the release:
- 3 mm working channel — really strong suction power (bench tests showed clearing ~15 mL of simulated mucus in just ~5 seconds using egg white as mimic)
- Reinforced body + optimized lens design for better navigation in tricky airways
- Weight & grip tuned specifically for long ICU procedures
- Plugs straight into their existing C-MAC visualization platform — so you can run video laryngoscopy, bronch-assisted intubation, diagnostic bronch, secretion clearance… all on the same screen without swapping systems

It’s not about revolutionary single-device specs (3 mm channel is already pretty standard for critical-care bronchoscopes).
The real game-changer is the platform play: turning airway management from a bunch of separate boxes and screens into one unified, efficient workflow. Less training, faster switches, better OR/ICU efficiency. In emergencies, those seconds (and reduced cognitive load) really count.
From Traditional Endoscopy King to Airway Platform Provider
Karl Storz has been around since 1945 — they’re legends in rigid scopes, surgical imaging, urology, ENT, laparoscopy, you name it.
But over the last decade they’ve been quietly (and smartly) expanding into full airway management:
- C-MAC video laryngoscope already everywhere in anesthesia/ER/ICU
- Adding modules so bronchoscopes, laryngoscopes, etc. share the same display and ecosystem
FIVE S series (they already had other sizes) fits perfectly into this “platform + single-use consumables” strategy. It’s less about selling one scope… and more about owning the entire airway workflow.
Disposable Bronchoscopes: From “Nice-to-Have Infection Control” → Core Tool in Critical Care
We all know the old pain points with reusable flexible bronchoscopes:
- Long, expensive reprocessing cycles
- Lingering cross-contamination risks even with perfect protocols
- Availability nightmares in middle-of-night codes or busy ICUs
Single-use scopes flip that:
- CMOS chip right at the tip → great image
- Ready out of the pack
- Shift cost from big capital spend → per-procedure consumable
COVID massively accelerated adoption (Ambu’s aScope basically set the standard in many Western hospitals). Now even traditional powerhouses like Karl Storz, Olympus, Boston Scientific are all-in.
What This Means for China & Emerging Players (Including Us at Tuyou Medical!)
Globally, the game is shifting from “who has the best single scope” → “who can integrate disposable tools into the biggest, smoothest ecosystem”.
For Chinese manufacturers (us included 🙋♂️), it’s a wake-up call.
We’ve come a long way fast:
- 2021: Launched RigiCam series (FHD & 4K rigid camera systems, integrated all-in-ones)
- 2023: First-gen flexible digital scope host + reusable flexible digital scopes
- 2025: Upgraded flexible host that supports both reusable and disposable flexible endoscopes
We’re already active in bronchoscopy, ENT, urology — delivering real surgical value with cost-effective, high-clarity imaging.
But looking ahead… the winners will be those who can offer not just great standalone disposable endoscopes, but platform-level compatibility — seamless integration with existing towers, monitors, recording systems, and ideally future-proof modularity.

What do you think — is the future 100% platform + disposable, or will hybrid reusable/disposable setups stick around longer in cost-sensitive markets? Drop a comment, I’d love to hear your take!
